Among other things, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to make changes to information security. NTT Security CEO Kazunori Yozawa pointed out, “Security is not a brake on a business; it is an investment for enabling acceleration.”

It is particularly important to be careful about ransomware. He continued, “A pipeline company in the U.S. was forced to shut down operations. There are also more and more cases of attacks impacting social activities, so the public and private sectors need to cooperate on tackling the problem.”

Shinji Abe of NTT Security said there are three reasons why ransomware attacks present such a difficult problem. “The first is that the attackers make money out of attacks; the second is that attackers target overseas facilities where governance is less effective; and the third is that after gaining access attackers pose as legitimate users, making them difficult to detect. So, a multipronged defense is needed.”

In October 2021, an international standard for strategic cybersecurity, ITU-T X.1060, was published for realizing a multifaceted defense without any “holes” across an entire organization. “X.1060 proposes the concept of a cyber defense center (CDC) for overseeing cyber risks over a whole organization. It offers a framework for addressing security organization-wide, rather than on a piecemeal basis,” Abe explained.

According to NTT Security Japan, a true cybersecurity strategy requires two approaches – technology and an organizational approach, like a CDC. On top of this, the company offers its own threat detection platform, Samurai XDR, combining AI, threat information and detection by analysts. “We want customers to combine this technology with an organizational strategy so that they can achieve true cybersecurity,” Yozawa stressed.
